Chapter 20
December 1950
ROBERT KNOCKED ON Mr. Sanders’s office door at 9:30 am. December had come and war with Korea had made for good business. More planes, more rubber. Robert was to meet with John and Cal to finish up the meeting that ended around one in the morning last night at John’s house to further ideas on maximizing production at lower costs. Robert had come up with several new possibilities while sitting in his cellar last night after finding himself too tired to sleep.
He decided to head down to John’s office half an hour early to go over a few questions before the meeting started. Robert knocked and waited to hear John’s beckoning before he entered. He saw John and Cal sitting at the large table with papers strewn about.
“Start without me?” Robert made his way to an empty chair.
“Not to be offended, Robert,” Cal said. “Just wanted to get an early start.”
“Make yourself a drink before you join us.” John held his own glass up toward Robert.
“You know me. I can’t drink at this hour.”
“Robert, it’s the holidays, I think you can make an exception. And besides, don’t you have a lot to drink to?” John asked his eyes empty and cold.
Robert looked down at the stacks of papers on the table and knew the meeting would take hours. Perhaps a small drink wouldn’t hurt and John was right, Robert did have a lot to drink too. In the past two years, John had raised Robert’s pay three times on top of two healthy bonuses. One large enough that he was able to buy Katherine a brand new car for her birthday. Robert would certainly drink to that.
“Allow me.” Cal got up and poured Robert a Scotch and handed it to him. Then he lifted his own glass. “To good friends, good money, and good whiskey.”
Two hours later, three money-making plans were set into place. John stood and walked to the window. He was quiet as he watched the snow drift onto the sidewalk below. Robert stared at him, wondering what he could be thinking about that let sadness seep into his eyes so quickly.
Cal collected and straightened the papers but Robert just watched John. For the first time in two years, Robert saw pain in this man. Tired, angry, hell even happy at times, but never pain. John’s eyes were empty reflecting a hollow soul as he gazed out the window as if seeing something other than townspeople bundled up below.
Just as Robert was about to question John, the office door burst open.
“Oh, my, it’s a chilly one today.” Carissa dusted off the snow from her coat before hanging it, along with her scarf, beside the door then looked around. “Well, it doesn’t look as if the three of you are busy which is good for me because I need some help. My car has stalled, and I have a ton of errands to run today.” She threw her hands in the air as she spoke. “Something is
